Santa’s Enchanted Wonderland Grotto

21 December 2017, 16:30 - 17:00

Wander through an enchanted corridor to arrive at Santa’s workshop, where you will be entertained by one of his elves: write your letter, look for his naughty friend and browse in the toyshop windows before taking a magical journey to meet Santa all cosy in his sitting room, where he will complete the magic with an early Christmas present.

Skin Deep - Painting the Face in pastel, acrylics or oils

The human face is eternally interesting. Join artist Linda Birch to create a human visage, taking inspiration from the current exhibition Skin Deep by Jonathan Yeo, who explores conceptual themes in his Surgery Series, depicting in the classical medium of oil paint, the intricacies and complex issues surrounding the current cult for cosmetic surgery and the quest for physical ‘perfection’.

A Nursery Rhyme in Line and Wash

14 September 2018, 10:00 - 16:30

This workshop is suitable for intermediate artists (artists who have been drawing and painting for one year or more). Please bring with you: Watercolours, a drawing pen 0.07, a technical drawing pen or a dip pen and bottle of Indian ink, an A3 heavyweight cartridge pad or Bristol Board, sketchbook and pencils.

Let it Snow – Two Small Christmas Pictures

07 December 2018, 10:00 - 16:30

The Bowes Museum has some lovely winter paintings, including the work of Joséphine Bowes. Based on a Hans Christian Andersen story about a little fir tree, join artist Linda Birch to create a small but richly decorative picture using watercolours or acrylics. The painting will be of two small images on a folded piece of mount card with a richly decorated edge.

Understanding Scottish Country Houses and Estates Today

Speaker Dr Annie Tindley, is a senior Lecturer in Modern British History, at Newcastle University.

Her research interests revolve around the interrogation of the aristocratic and landed classes, landed estates and their management from the mid-eighteenth to mid-twentieth centuries, in the Scottish, Irish, British and imperial contexts. Dr. Tindley is interested in the ways in which landed elites defined and translated their power. Organised by the Friends of The Bowes Museum.

Embroidered Poppy Workshop

01 March 2019, 10:30 - 13:00

Join textile artist Pat Ashton-Smith for a free workshop to create a 3D poppy using raised embroidery techniques. During the workshop you will learn three ways to create wired flower petals and make your own poppy, which can be made into a brooch or mount in a card or frame. Please bring along a small pair of scissors, a materials pack will be provided.
